Mitch McConnell Embraces Derogatory Nickname Bestowed by Trump, Gifts Custom ‘Old Crow’ Bourbon Bottles to Republican Senators

Last week, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell continued to lean into the “old crow” nickname and insult given to him by former President Donald Trump. McConnell gifted bottles of Old Crow bourbon to his fellow Republican senators at a luncheon he hosted Thursday, according to the Courier Journal.
In February, McConnell said he liked the nickname because Old Crow is his favorite bourbon, adding that it also was the favorite bourbon of Henry Clay, who represented Kentucky in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in the early-to-mid 1800s.
Last month, McConnell reiterated that old crow is his favorite nickname, choosing it over others including grim reaper and cocaine Mitch. At the time, McConnell said: “[The nickname] was given to me by the former president, who’s apparently not a fan. And my response was, I wanted to thank him because this was Henry Clay’s favorite bourbon.”
Trump first called McConnell “old crow” in November, saying, “Why is it that Old Crow Mitch McConnell voted for a terrible Democrat Socialist Infrastructure Plan, and induced others in his Party to do likewise, when he was incapable of getting a great Infrastructure Plan wanting to be put forward by me and the Republican Party?” This quote came after McConnell voted for President Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill.
McConnell publicly broke allegiance with Trump in January, following the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. After McConnell refuted Trump’s assertion that the 2020 presidential election had been stolen from him by President Joe Biden, Trump screamed obscenities at McConnell and called him “weak” and “disloyal,” according to Bob Woodward and Robert Costa’s book “Peril.” McConnell reportedly long had disliked Trump before publicly disavowing him.
Old Crow is an inexpensive Kentucky straight bourbon brand that has been around since the 1800s and today is distilled by Beam Suntory.
