On Feb. 10, Sotheby’s held its first whiskey auction of the year in New York. The highlight of the sale was an extremely rare bottle of scotch — The Macallan Distil Your World New York Single Cask Edition — which sold for $250,000, blowing away its pre-sale estimated range of $30,000-$80,000.

This particular bottle is one of only two bottles created of Distil Your World New York Single Cask Edition, and the second bottle will be kept in The Macallan archive, making the winner of the auction the only consumer in the world to have this Macallan bottling.

The bottle was housed in a blue presentation box featuring an engraved aerial map of New York and was accompanied by a booklet about the bottle and Distil Your World New York series. The booklet was signed by the talent featured in the Distil Your World New York documentary that aired with the release of the bottle. Additionally, the winner of this lot, plus three guests, will be granted a dining experience at El Celler de Can Roca, a three MICHELIN Star restaurant in Catalonia, Spain.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit ChaShaMa, a nonprofit arts organization based in New York City.

“We are delighted to continue our long association of partnering with Sotheby’s to present very special releases that raise funds for charitable organizations around the world,” Geoff Kirk, channel director secondary market at The Macallan, said in a news release. “The Macallan has a longstanding history celebrating artistry and supporting the arts and we are proud that the funds from this very special release, which pays homage to one of the world’s most iconic cities, will benefit New York City artists through the ChaShaMa charity.”

The Macallan Distil Your World New York Single Cask Edition is a single-cask whisky from a European Oak Sherry Puncheon. The whisky was distilled in 2002 and bottled at cask strength 55% ABV.
