Todays whiskey review is a special one - an independent bottling of distillate from a distillery we don't often see: Aberlour. This 16 year Aberlour was matured in a refill barrel and bottled at cask strength, with no coloring or filtering, by the SMWS. Let's dive in.
Rich bread, honey, almond and toffee. Cake batter, faint white wine, toasty vanilla and some creme brulee. Lemon curd and rich citrus.
Rich on the palate, sweet with lots of pepper. Honey, lemon pie filling, toffee and roasted coffee. Cracked pepper, rising bread and fresh baked cake. Sweet cashew with hint of floral sweetness. Sits nicely on the palate, coats evenly and the proof feels right on.
Short to medium in length on the finish, but with a satisfying warmth. Cake batter, lemon zest, light honey and amaretto fade nicely.
This is really well done, and a great exercise in nuance. Without heavy wine to hide behind, the Aberlour base malt has to work, and work hard it does. This is expertly balanced, with plenty going on.
