Todays whiskey review comes to us in the form of an independently bottled Auchroisk, distilled in 2009 and matured for 10 years in a barrique that was then shaved, toasted and recharred. Interesting. This is bottled at cask strength, without coloring or filtering, by the SMWS. Let's get to it.
Powerful and sweet - honey, butterscotch, nougat. Fresh croissant, buttery and sweet. Almost intoxicatingly sweet - not cloying, but extremely decadent.
Sweet again on the palate - notes of lemon curd, honey, cake batter, slivered almond, minerality and cream cheese frosting. Medium on the palate, with a hint of heat, but all is well behaved. Faint cocoa. Nutella. All dessert, all day. Fruits be damned.
Long finish, really lovely here. Oats, candied almond, pepper, bread and yeast. Lemon and cream cheese frosting. Lovely lovely lovely.
This my jam, in a way that typically is not my jam. I love how decadent and dessert forward this is, while still maintaining some complexity and falling short of being cloying. I want to drink this while I eat lemon danish and think about having a cigar or some prosciutto. Its really great.
