Distilled by Balcones in collaboration with ZZ Top, this release combines Rye, Malted Barley and their special Roasted Blue Corn for a release that screams 'Texas' about as loudly as any whiskey could. With early batches selling out in minutes, is this whiskey worth the hype? Let's dig in.
Malty, fruit driven and lively. Plenty of butterscotch, apples, pears, honey, clove, a touch of mild oak. Quite a bit going on.
Sweet on the palate - moderate to rich mouthfeel. A touch of syrupy Dole fruit cocktail syrup, apples, pears, melon, toffee and vanilla bean. A good deal of oak, honey, it combines nicely.
Medium finish, again it's a honey bomb. Light on the oak, fruity and complex. It's an easy sipper, with a clean, easy finish. The 50% ABV bottling proof is a good choice here, with plenty of character minus a burning finish.
Overall, this is an understated, enjoyable, complex bottling that does a great job of delivering good whiskey first, and a celebrity collaboration second.
