  • Excerpt: I also find notes of bitter wood and licorice to be present too. There is also an underlying grassy-ness to this whiskey but I couldn’t decide if it was coming from the earthy notes of the Armagnac barrels or if it was the way Black Velvet tastes at cask strength.

  • Intro:

Distilled in Canada and bottled here in the USA by Barrell Craft Spirits, this 24yr, cask strength, blend of barrels saw time maturing separately in Oloroso Sherry and XO Armagnac casks before being blended together and bottled. It's an annual entrant into Barrell's "Gray Label" premium bottling series, and retails for about $250.

  • Nose:

Potent and syrupy on the nose. Filled with honey, syrupy grape, port wine, raisin bread and creme brûlée.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate, ethanol is deceptive, sneaky, well behaved. Rich honey, toffee, butterscotch, apple pie, date fruit and tobacco. Whew!

  • Finish:

Long finish, the ethanol once again sneaks by. Packed with flavor, honey, butterscotch, light tannins, some oak and toffee.

  • Overall:

Delightful. Powerful, syrupy, buttery, and packed with great, dry, berry character. This isn't the heavy hitter that the Gold Label and the Seagrass 16 are, but it's a great sip. Worth $250? That's your call. Fans of buttery, fruit and tobacco laden whiskeys will surely want to bite.
