Benriach 20 Year Signatory Vintage 2000 Cask #3

  • Distiller:

    Benriach

  • Bottler:

    Signatory Vintage

  • ABV:

    59.1%

  • Age:

    20 Years

  • Price:
    $$$$$
  • Intro:

Distilled by Benriach on May 24th of 2000, this single malt aged for 20 years (19.5 years in refill sherry and 6 months in fresh sherry) until bottling on February 18th of 2021. Hailing from Cask #3, this barrel yielded 706 bottles.

  • Nose:

Rich, creamy, sherry. Currants, figs, blackberry and red fruits mix with syrupy sweetness, a touch of pepper and anise, and a jammy quality. Faint touch of minerality, very much diminished. Pure sherry goodness on the nose.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate. Great viscosity, a prickle of ethanol. Pepper, honey, blackberry jam, marmalade, orange preserve, ginger, cocoa and rich currants blend into a spicy, sherry forward delight. Notable spice on the palate, not boldly tannic. Fascinating complexity.

  • Finish:

Long finish: syrupy and once again sherry forward with spicy undertow. Cocoa, toffee, blackberry, pipe tobacco, ginger and cracked peppercorns continue the exhibition of sweet, spicy and single malt goodness.

  • Overall:

Overall, this is one of the more complex single casks I've had from this distillery, and this is up there with some of the best casks released by the distillery itself. It's rare to see this level of elegant spice paired with heavy, heavy sherry character, but it works and helps to ensure that the wine doesn't become cloying. A winner left and right.
