  • Excerpt: Certainly fine, but tasting it right after the 10, it calms down the bright fruit that I enjoyed in the younger whisky.

  • Excerpt: That dried fruit starts you off here, becoming richer and warmer into very dark chocolate. A burst of juicy fruit comes out like a sneaker wave, like peach lemonade. The back palate is pleasantly dry, and has a wisp of vegetal smoke.

  • Excerpt: Enjoyable from start to finish, this is a lovely Saturday afternoon sipper and far more complex and enjoyable than you’d expect from a core 12 year old. Yup… this BenRiach The Twelve is nice.

  • Intro:

Distilled by Benriach and a product party to their recent redesign, The Original Twelve is an unpeated, Speyside Single Malt Whiskey and features some partial maturation in wine casks.

  • Nose:

Rich baking spice, peach and pear, honey and slivered almond. A bit of wine sweetness on this release, with a touch of oak showing on the nose.

  • Taste:

Sweet and rich on the palate - cream, honey, a nice light toffee note. Some spice, light ash character, sweet fig and plum.

  • Finish:

Long finish here with plenty of cream, honey, a buttery texture on the back of the palate and some sweet wine. Impressive how long the finish just sticks around and compliments the palate.

  • Overall:

Much like the Ten, Benriach's The Original Twelve has tons of great character that make it an inviting dram. With much more wine influence at the cost of giving up some base malt and terroir, this expression serves as a great bottle, whether celebrating or kicking back on a Tuesday evening.
