Distilled by Benriach and aged for 21 years in a variety of bourbon, sherry, red wine and port casks, this new release lives in their old and rare collection of hyper aged bottlings.
Fragrant, fruit forward with a stone and earth element that works nicely. Jammy fruit, sweet peach and apricot, a nice malt character and some light ash.
Moderate mouthfeel - a bit thinner than hoped, but quite complex. Some ash, slate, a bit of earth. Sweet malt forward profile with lovely stewed fruits like currant, cherry, peach, date and fig. Lightest smoke character adds more complexity yet.
Gentle, complex finish with a bit more smoke taking that sweet, jammy edge off. Impressively long lasting.
Really quite a release from Benriach - The Twenty One is an exercise in gentle balance and complexity: a dram worth sitting and savoring and discovering new flavors. It's not some brash, powerful, flavor beast - and that's alright.
