This is Bernheim Barrel Proof: a blend of 7- to 9-year-old wheat whiskey (51% wheat mashbill) that's bottled at barrel proof. The first release of 2023 (and ever), this is batch A223, and it's bottled at 59.4% ABV.
Punchy at first, the wheat can't be understated here. It's fiery and loaded with sweet butterscotch, honey, caramel and heather. This nose is packed with brown butter and enticing maple.
Rich on the palate, Bernheim Barrel Proof has a decadent texture, silky and layered with honey, butterscotch and pleasant oak. This has a beautiful structure. Caramel candies, a touch of pepper and clove, faint cinnamon and a final hit of sweet oak.
Long finish, it's powerful yet nuanced, complex and delicious. This finish carries for ages, packed full of butterscotch candies, caramel and sweet oak.
A masterpiece from Heaven Hill, my only exclamation is how wonderful and overdue it is. Wheat whiskey is here to stay.
