This is Black Steel Bourbon, the whiskey incarnate from Guy Beahm, better known as Dr DisRespect. As one of the internet's most prolific video game streamers, his audience extends into the tens of millions. Does the Dr. have any idea what a good whiskey is about? With no word as to the distiller, this is Batch 02 of Black Steel, distilled and bottled in Kentucky and bottled at 50% ABV. Let's dive in.
Pleasant, sweet and fruity, it opens with apple butter, peaches, sweet cream and butterscotch and a touch of oak.
Moderate mouthfeel with a touch of oak, no sign of youth, brown sugar, honey and light toasted nuts, like almonds. Hint of baking spice and pepper. Pleasant overall — easy drinking. The proof works nicely here.
Moderate finish once again, carrying more oak and baking spice along with that fruit character from the nose. Sweet, some toasted almond, caramel, apple butter and a hint of pepper.
Overall, this is totally approachable and easy-drinking whiskey. It's one of the better celeb whiskeys to cross the desk here. I can appreciate that this feels like a whiskey made first and a partnership second, rather than being covered in gaudy advertisements and tropes. I think with an extra year or two of age (and an age statement) this could compete with quite a few mid-shelf brands with ease.
