The first release in Irish distillery Clonakilty's Cask Series, this is a blend of Irish malt and 9-year-old Irish grain. This release features a secondary maturation in port casks from the Douro Valley.
A touch of grain up front yields to red berries, pleasant malt, fresh honey and a touch of rising bread.
Pleasant and sweet on the palate this whiskey benefits from the port casks, which really do add here to the younger profile of the spirit. Honey, fresh bread, a touch of raspberry and currant, faint pepper and a hint of clove on the finish. A little hot for the proof, but nothing punishing.
Pleasant here again, the finish is probably the best part of the pour, tangling red berries with sweet cream and a touch of honey.
It’s cool to see the new expressions rolling out from Clonakilty, and there’s no mistaking they’re well on their way.
