  • Intro:

This is an independent bottling of spirit distilled at Craigellachie and bottled by the SMWS. Aged for 8 years, this expression matured in a second-fill Oloroso sherry butt and was bottled without coloring or filtering. This was one of 90 bottles allocated to the US. Let's dive in.

  • Nose:

Sweet, but very malt forward. Brine, rising bread, cake batter, musty with some almond. Almost a faint sour cheese note. This is exceptionally funky, even for Craigellachie, and I can not tell if it is the wine or what not but there is also some nice cherry, lingonberry, faint pine needle.

  • Taste:

Sweet and rich on the palate. Honey, melon, amaretto and almonds, blueberry ad raising. We find more of that rising bread note, though really funky and damp yet. The wine is far more apparent here, lots of red berry, caramel, malt and honey.

  • Finish:

Long and far less punishing than the sister entry for this bruiser of a scotch. Fresh bread, toasted almond, raisins and lingonberry. Pretty nice overall, with plenty going on.

  • Overall:

This is far better than the previous entry, and though it runs a hair hot, it isn’t punishing. The funk throughout with the wine just works, which is great to see.

  • Score:

    6
