  • Publication: Drink Hacker
  • Excerpt: This is a decidedly scattered, and again, quite strange, whisky, and for all of $25 you probably won’t overly regret the investment should the “Mizunara” emblazoned on the label suck you in. That said, it bears zero resemblance to anything actually produced in Japan.

  • Intro:

Much like the other entries in this series, Dewar's has taken their base blend and sent it off for a variety of finishes in unique wine and wood casks. This release sees a period of time finishing in Japanese Mizunara barrels. Let's dive in!

  • Nose:

Sweet, grainy, a touch sweet, but not wildly complex. Apples, pears, black tea, sandalwood, a touch of bitter oak and green tea.

  • Taste:

Thin to medium on the palate. Brown sugar, spritely malt, a touch of honey, black tea and lemongrass.

  • Finish:

Short to medium finish. Sweet and grain forward, rising bread, vanilla bean, a tinge of ethanol, and a lightly bitter character.

  • Overall:

Overall, this might just be the best of the series second to the Portuguese. it's not wildly complex, but there is some interesting character here and helps to demonstrate what some minimal Mizunara can do for a young blend.
