  • Intro:

The first, of three, releases in 2022's Limited Edition calendar, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A122 is released at a moderately low ABV compared to some historical bottlings. The first bottling of this year weighs in at 60.4%. ECBP carries a consistent 12yr age statement.

  • Nose:

Rich toffee and a funk that's new to the profile. Toffee, buttercream, peanut brittle, funky tobacco, decadent raisin bread, and a cherry cola.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate, cocoa, cola, toffee, root beer candies, toffee and peanut brittle. This almost reminds me more of a teenage Knob Creek than the profile of Elijah Craig of last year. It's enticing, decadent, dessert all the time. It drinks mellow, viscous, rich, sweet and I don't see the reduction in proof here as a hurt. Oak is bold, well integrated, not too bitter. Well blended all over.

  • Finish:

Long finish. The lower proof again works well here. Great blend of syrupy viscosity, a decadent sweetness with plenty of toffee, cola, a light funky dessert quality and a long tobacco finish.

  • Overall:

The first release of 2022, while low proof, is a rockstar from Heaven Hill. Fans of high proof bourbon need not worry, there's plenty of flavor here and it's a luxury to live in a world where 60.4% ABV is viewed as 'low' for sure. Overall, the drift in profile here seeing the re-emergence of great cherry and cola notes along with some funky peanut brittle notes will keep drinkers on their toes and interested. It's the best in a while.
