Distilled by an undisclosed distiller, Foundation Batch 5 comes to us from Four Gate Whiskey Company in Kentucky. Yielding 590 bottles, this release features 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley, and a 9yr9mo age statement. Bottled at barrel proof, without filtering.
Bold pepper, cherry, oak, a spicy funk. It's like Beam funk, to some degree. Rich caramel, nougat, roasted nuts, and cocoa. Orange peel, light touch of bitters. Fuuuunky tobacco.
Rich on the palate. Honey, toffee, a light grape sweetness, followed by cherry cola. Cocoa, caramel, more musty funk. Cracked pepper on the back palate, a touch of cola.
Long spicy finish, a touch hot but very well integrated. The oak and tannin is most easily noticed here, blending nicely with cherry pie, caramel, fresh baked pastries and another touch of tobacco.
Really fantastic bottling here, in what tastes like a bold clash between a teenage Knob Creek single barrel and a Stagg Jr rendition. Funky, sweet, cherry forward, heavy on the oak without bitter tannins. Yum.
