  • Excerpt: Overall, a pleasant experience with a decent proof makes this a good one to have for an after-dinner dram. Serve with a slice of cake if you like, but you would also do well to pair this with a cheese like Taleggio or Manchego.

  • Excerpt: Glenmorangie: A Tale of Cake combines Tokaji wine casks and Glenmorangie spirit to produce a surprisingly competent bottling that's complex and enjoyable with just the right amount of sweetness. Arriving just before the Holidays, it's no mistake that Cake is meant to be enjoyed by a fire or Christmas goose.

  • Intro:

Glenmorangie: A Tale of Cake is a Scotch whiskey - a single malt from the tallest stills in Scotland. What stands out about this desserty release is the finishing period in Tokaji casks. Tokaji is a Hungarian, late harvest, sweet wine. Now you're probably noticing where the Cake alliteration comes in - this is a single malt finished in dessert wine casks that is sure to cater to a sweet tooth in the audience.

  • Nose:

Bright and crisp initially. Honey, passion fruit, rising bread and a touch of wine sweetness. Apple crisp, amaretto, light brown butter. Fascinating nose.

  • Taste:

Medium mouth feel, though devoid of ethanol. Buttery and sweet. Slivered almonds, faint pepper, light brown sugar and an apple crisp element - fuji apples, light brown butter, some cinnamon. It's sweet but not cloying, and lacks the typical bitterness I find in most Glenmorangie expressions.

  • Finish:

Long finish, sweet and decadent. Faint ethanol on the finish but it's sweet and complex. Flakey pastry, apple and pear, hint of sugar and satisfying dessert wine notes carry for some time.

  • Overall:

Overall, I was wary of this bottling. Glenmorangie wines typically carry a base spirit bitterness that I'm not really into, and this seemed like it was equally susceptible to becoming too sweet. Thankfully, neither of these worries were realistic as this bottling blends Glenmorangie spirit and Tokaji wonderfully. It's sweet, complex, supple and enjoyable - the perfect dram for after a holiday meal or paired by a freshly built fire. It's an interesting dram I look forward to enjoying with falling snow in due time.
