  • Intro:

Distilled by Midleton and matured in a blend of bourbon barrels, sherry butts, Bordeaux wine casks and port pipes, this is the 2022 release of Mitchell & Sons in the Spot whiskey brand. It's bottled at 51.4% ABV with no coloring or filtering. Let's dive in.

  • Nose:

Intensely sweet and enticing, it's full of rich custard, butter cream, confectioners sugar, creme brulee and a touch of coconut and orange peel. Rich and buttery, light on tannic, heavy on dessert.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate, this is proofed very nicely. Syrupy texture, it's silky with plenty going on. Honey, berries, cherry and orange peel meet coconut, vanilla cream and a rich, tannic spice to balance out the sweets. Lightly nutty, primarily almond, it's complex and easy to drink and enjoy at 51.4% ABV.

  • Finish:

Long finish, rich and leaning a touch spicier. Honey and coconut persist with a touch of red berries and blackberry persisting through the finish.

  • Overall:

Overall, despite the modest age statement, this release is a winner through and through with tons of character, balance and complexity. Few things can prove age is just a number this effectively, as Gold Spot's release is a fitting anniversary bottling, rich with flavor and complexity. If you see one in your travels, you best pick it up.
