Distilled by Heaven Hill using a 78% corn, 10% rye, 12% malted barley mashbill, this is their newest release and the beginning of the Heritage Collection. Bottled at 59.1% ABV, it's no slouch in the ABV department. Most notably, this release contains a bit of a secret curveball: this release is a blend of older whiskeys, with the youngest bearing that 17yr age statement. 17yr (28%), 19yr (44%) and 20yr (28%) whiskey comprise the blend, which will retail for just under $300 MSRP. It's rare to see a 17yr bourbon on the shelf, recently released. It's even rarer to see this kind of composition on the modern whiskey stage.
Fruity at first, heavy on the brown sugar, toffee and rice pudding. Berries and cream, clove, pepper and a touch of oak. Lively, vivacious, fruit forward - an interesting and unexpected profile for something this old. Lovely, enticing.
Rich on the palate, fruity at first with a bold, spicy, toffee forward backbone. Oaky, dry, loaded with peaches and cream, strawberry preserve, brown sugar, maple candies, tobacco and old oak. Rich and viscous, a prickle of heat, but nicely balanced. Sweet, oaky, fruity, savory.
Long, spicy, dry finish. Root beer candies, cherry pie, cola and tobacco on tobacco on tobacco.
Decadent, rich, a total rollercoaster. Fruity on the nose, rich on the palate with sweet fruit and dessert, paired with a bold, spicy finish. For whiskey this old, those pesky tannins are perfectly balanced. If you're a fan of fruit, dessert, tannin, and tobacco, this is going to impress. The secret with this release is the composition of much older whiskey, and it shows in bringing the additional complexity that balances each element so nicely.
