  • Excerpt: I would put this up against many other well-established barrel strength whiskies around the same price range. If you get the chance to make it to Columbus, Ohio, stop and get a bottle. You will not regret it.

  • Excerpt: The High Bank Distillery Whiskey War Barrel Proof came across not overwhelmingly aggressive neat, but could be a more useful cocktail ingredient than the regular bottling, should you be able to source it. Fortunately, I don’t think you’re missing much if you can’t, as the regular bottling is quite good. These were both highly impressive, especially for the money.

  • Intro:

This is the barrel-proof version of Columbus, Ohio distillery High Bank's flagship product, Whiskey War. Aged at least five years, this is a rye-heavy blend of American whiskeys bottled at 59.9% ABV. Available for about $50, this is pretty accessible price-wise. Let's see how it is.

  • Nose:

Bold char, maple and baking spice. Light notes of honeydew, faint citrus.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel, pleasant viscosity and barrel char. Cinnamon, clove, honey and a touch of bitter oak. Ethanol is in check here and adds a really pleasant richness.

  • Finish:

Long finish, reminds me of a s’more — it’s packed with cocoa, graham cracker, marshmallow sweetness and a touch of ash and char.

  • Overall:

A huge improvement from the standard Whiskey War, this barrel-proof expression from High Bank is a rich, full-bodied expression that stands well on its own and easily puts High Bank on the map of new producers to watch.
