  • Intro:

Distilled and bottled by High Bank in Columbus, Ohio, this is the distillery's base, flagship expression. It's priced at about $37. Let's dive into this 88-proof high-rye whiskey blend.

  • Nose:

Baking spice, honey, sweet apple pie and some lovely sweet oak. Pleasantly complex on the nose.

  • Taste:

Sweet at first, heavy on the honey and a touch of maple. Thin to medium mouthfeel. Touch of bitter oak. Light pepper. This isn't wildly complex, but it’s pleasant and easy to drink, and the honey/maple profile is easy to enjoy.

  • Finish:

Medium finish, grows a touch bitter with time, but it’s pleasantly complex and has more tannin than expected — a pleasant surprise.

  • Overall:

This is my first taste from High Bank, and it’s showing quite nicely. It’s not the most complex American whiskey in the world, but it’s well on its way to developing nicely, and a couple more years will certainly place this in an enviable spot.
