Distilled by Highland Park, aged for 15 years and finished in port pipes and bottled at an approachable, this is Highland Park Fire Edition. Can it live up to its eccentric, yet slick, packaging? Let's dig in.
Creamy brown sugar, malt, cocoa and a touch of cinnamon and stewed fruits.
Caramel and honey. Not a ton, but some cocoa, light cinnamon. Zesty orange peel, rising bread, light cherry and cranberry notes. Peppery and fairly viscous.
Long finish. Malt forward, followed by some hints of wine. Great malt character, nice tannin, faint spice and sweetness.
Pretty darn enjoyable. It's not going to turn any heads among some of Highland Park's truly epic bottlings without the packaging, but it's a great sip and shows that port can be used to enhance and not cover the base malt. It's a tough sell for the price, but if your friend is buying, it's one to give a shot.
