Intro:
American whiskey goliath Jack Daniel's is best known for its affordable and accessible Tennessee whiskey. In recent years, however, the producer has been busy expanding its selection, setting its targets on whiskey connoisseurs while still producing its base expressions for the masses. This release — the first ever single malt releaed by Jack Daniel's — is the brand's farthest step out of its comfort zone yet. Released in November 2022, this whiskey is distilled from a mashbill of 100% barley, passed through Jack Daniel's charcoal mellowing process, aged in new oak barrels for at least four years and finished for two years in Oloroso sherry casks.

Nose:
Rich, like a brownie fresh from the oven. Espresso, toffee, dark chocolate and a touch of red berries. Rich and malty, heavy and complex, though light on oak.

Taste:
Rich on the palate, the proof is wildly deceptive. This drinks like 90-proof but in reality clocks in near 110. Malt and cherry lead the way along with tons of cocoa, honey, tobacco, pepper and funky raisin bread.

Finish:
Long finish. The tannin kicks in a bit here, offsetting the sweetness of the malt and drying the palate. Cherry cordials, toffee, honey and more tobacco and espresso notes persist.

Overall:
Fans of Jack Daniels won't have tasted a profile like this from the brand ever, and it's going to be interesting to see who's on board and who's jumping ship. This release exists on an island for the brand, and there's no doubting it's an instant success in my opinion. Rich, enticing and interesting, the lack of flaws on this first release makes it clear that Jack Daniel's has embraced experimentation at every turn and is ready to play hardball with a widened portfolio starting right away.
