Raided Score: 86 Publication: Drinkhacker Excerpt: In the end, this one turns out to be a fairly straightforward and well-constructed rye whiskey, in need of a little more age to make it a good sipper but definitely bold and flavorful enough for an elevated cocktail. An April 2022 release, The Wiseman Rye joins the Kentucky Owl lineup alongside The Wiseman Bourbon. The 10-proof bump over The Wiseman Bourbon has us excited to taste this.
Bold rye spice, tons of honey, ginger, sweet cream and a pop of herbal funk, orange peel and acidity.
Moderate mouthfeel, rich rye character, brown sugar, orange peel and a touch of anise and black tea. It’s punchy, the ABV hides nicely behind maple, caramel, fresh rye bread.
Long finish, the best part for certain, great combination of sweetness, rye spice and pleasant oakiness.
While the bourbon was just fine, this rye reaches well beyond it, in no small part due to bump in proof and a pleasant tannin influence. Punchy rye from Kentucky? Pour another.
