Distilled in 1983 and bottled in 2015, this is Laphroaig's distillery bottling of their 32yr, cask strength, expression. Matured fully in first fill Oloroso wine casks, this bottling should legitimately provide a window into a different era of whiskey production. Let's dive in.
Sweet, jammy, with a hint of Islay smoke. Apricot, fig, tangerine and all manner of sweet fruit, syrupy raisin and lovely coastal air. Light on the peat, but Laphroaig signature character is there, hiding among the apricots.
Rich, syrupy mouthfeel. No sign of ethanol, there's more viscosity than I'd have expected for the proof. Stewed apple, pear, fig, apricot, peach. Creamy, sweet, a bit of toffee, pepper and faint iodine. Briny, coastal air influence and some earthiness. Its incredible how much complexity and flavor reside, without a monster ABV.
Long finish - perhaps the best part. Cooked peaches, syrupy caramel and big creamy sweetness. Long, peppery finish with tons of fruit character and Laphroaig smoke.
Magnificent in every way, it's amazing what 32 years in sherry can do, although it doesn't hide the incredible character that Laphroaig base malt can deliver, presenting incredible balance.
