This is an independent bottling of spirit distilled at Laphroaig. Bottled after aging 8 years in first fill Oloroso wine casks, this Scotch Universe bottling comes to us at cask strength with no coloring or filtering. Let's dive in.
Rich toffee, slivered almond, fresh baked bread and honey. Light peat and smoke here, with some pepper. Sweet fig and pear.
Syrupy mouth feel, lots of complexity. Sweet cream, more amaretto almond notes, paired with iodine, fresh baked bread, buttered popcorn and mineral ash. Rich and savory, the wine is in balance here, which is refreshing to see given the current bludgeoning we see with other projects. This line between the wine sweet and the bready smoky malt character is remarkably taunt.
Long, powerful and growing more savory. Faintly meaty, lots of praline, sawdust, charcoal and signature Laphroaig Islay smoke. Not as sweet here, but super savory and packed with flavor. Oak structure is nice, not overbearing, and helps deliver well.
I really like this. While it feels a bit unique, I'm every bit a fan, especially to see more almond + bakery notes rather than lemon curd and cream style profiles. Delicious. This is a mark bottlers everywhere should look, learn from, and seek to hit.
