  • Intro:

This is a unique, interesting and expensive release from Laphroaig. This single cask of Laphroaig was matured for 4.5 years in ex-bourbon, then further for another 9.5 years in a PX sherry cask. Bottled at cask strength, without filtering or coloring, this promises to be a treat. Selling for $300 at Julio's in MA, there are still some left, if I'm not mistaken, since it appears Laphroaig somewhat overestimated demand for a $300, 13ish year scotch. Let's dive in.

  • Nose:

Sweet cherry, blackberry, currant and lingonberry. Blueberry icing and then the peat storms in. Pepper, iodine, sea air, dead things in the sea. Sweet then peppery, fruity then peaty. Iodine reigns supreme.

  • Taste:

Sweet and rich. Thick, powerful, complex. Prickle of heat, then blueberry, blackberry, cherry and currant. Powerful lemon meringue, cream and honey before burning wood, ash and peat arrive. Powerful, pungent and potent.

  • Finish:

All peat. Burning wood, charcoal, brine, the sea, iodine and the death of seahorses. Scratch that last thing. It’s pungent, meaty and bandaid forward.

  • Overall:

Powerful, complex, potent. It’s complex and demands attention. Really enjoyable, really complex. It’s everything I love. Strong work, Laphroaig.
