Distilled in 1996, aged for 19 years and finished in Oloroso sherry casks, this release from Ledaig promises to be an interesting ride given the brand's stature in the Scotch whiskey world. Oloroso is a drier, sherry expression, much more so than PX (Pedro Ximenez) which hopefully will work well with Ledaig's notoriously mineral forward distillate.
Plum and honey on the nose, with a pork rib bbq quality, peaches and cream, jammy.
Medium viscosity on the palate, grilled pineapple, bbq ribs, burning wood, minerality and rich, mature oak and peach rings.
Long, feisty, powerful. Loaded with cherry, grilled pineapple, prickle of minerality, burning wood and a delightful smokiness.
Lovely bottling that shows what a good wine finish can contribute without becoming overwhelming. It's Ledaig at its finest and most unrestrained, with a wine facet that "just works".
