Lost Lantern ‘Gentle Giant’ Balcones Distilling Texas Single Malt

  • Distiller:

    Balcones

  • Bottler:

    Lost Lantern

  • ABV:

    57.6%

  • Age:

    3 Years Old

  • Price:
    $$$$$
  • Intro:

Part of Lost Lantern's Single Distillery series, this is a collaboration between Waco, Texas distillery Balcones and the Vermont-based independent bottler Lost Lantern. Gentle Giant is a whiskey featuring maturation in ex-apple brandy, ex-bourbon and new European oak casks.

  • Nose:

Delightfully off-kilter for Balcones, this is presenting more like soft butter and fruits, honey, flaky pastry and a good bit of char, but far less than a typical Balcones ASM.

  • Taste:

Rich and viscous, honey-forward once more with char, light tobacco, bready pudding, sweet cream and pleasant toffee notes. Pleasant and punchy, this is a change in gears, to say the least.

  • Finish:

Malt character shines through here with warm rising bread, honey, apple butter and pleasant butter cream, brown sugar and toffee.

  • Overall:

This is an unusual change of pace for a Balcones spirit but it’s great stuff.

  • Score:

    6
