  • Excerpt: I would definitely recommend everyone give this at least two tries before drawing conclusions. This would pair incredibly well with dessert as a first pour of the day.

  • Excerpt: If you enjoy toasted whiskeys, you will enjoy this whiskey as well. If you enjoy big, barrel-proof classic bourbon, this won't be your cup of tea. Overall, though, I think it is an enticing release from Michter’s, but I wouldn't stand out in the cold for it.

  • Intro:

Michter's US*1 Toasted Sour Mash 2022 is only the second release of the expression, following its debut in 2019.

  • Nose:

Sweet corn, notably buttered and canned corn. There's a bit of donut frosting, fresh icing, sweet notes of caramel and honey, but more on the icing side than the caramel side. Overall, it is pretty sweet. There's very little tannin and very little spice. There's a light apple pie note, which would be cinnamon, clove, buttery pastry and sweet stone fruits like apples and pears. Very sweet, very dessert-forward.

  • Taste:

Thin on the palate and sweet. A light bit of cracked pepper, but everything after that is sweet notes such as caramel, crème brûlée and caramelized sugars. A little bit of burnt sugar and faint bitterness. It's pleasant. It reminds me of buttery popcorn and butterscotch, all sweet notes all day long, and vanilla bean ice cream. The palate is thin to medium, and there is no heat. It's very easy to drink.

  • Finish:

The finish is medium to long. It is sweet again, buttered popcorn, crème brûlée and vanilla bean ice cream.

  • Overall:

If you enjoy toasted whiskeys, you will enjoy this whiskey as well. If you enjoy big, barrel-proof classic bourbon, this won't be your cup of tea. Overall, though, I think it is an enticing release from Michter’s, but I wouldn't stand out in the cold for it.
