Distilled and aged for Midleton, this release is 2021's entry into their Very Rare collection of bottlings. Bottled at 40% ABV and costing around $200, its understandable why many are hesitant to purchase. That's where we at Whiskey Raiders come in: let's dive in.
Sweet cream, banana bread, peach rings and sweet vanilla bean ice cream. Mild, sweet, inviting. Dessert forward.
Moderate mouthfeel, some viscosity and a touch of heat despite the low proof. Buttery cream, pecans, light peach and pear sweetness. A touch of butterscotch, pipe tobacco and pepper.
Long finish. The lighter nose and palate give way to a longer, oakier finish here with lots of rich tobacco, caramel candies and maple richness. Faint peach and pear notes persist, but blend nicely with the complexity of the finish.
Midleton's Very Rare release of 2021 doesn't do much to entrance drinkers initially, but the more you sip and the longer you spend with the bottle, it's easier and easier to be drawn in. From a timid, thin dram to a complex and enjoyable dessert experience, it takes some serious time, but the patient are rewarded - assuming they are willing to shell out for the toil. That said, very good whiskey awaits.
