  • Excerpt: It’s a whiskey that develops a lot in the glass but never gets tiresome as it goes through its changes. It’s fine on its own, but I’m putting the rest of the bottle to work in cocktails.

  • Excerpt: Its flavor profile nicely complements its softness yet doesn’t forget its heritage either, featuring some nice heat on the finish. This interesting side quest New Riff ventured down has resulted in a winner.

  • Excerpt: It’s spicier than the nose and leads with cloves and accented with a sprig of dill, but is rounded out by full notes of vanilla, malty honey, and apples and pears. The finish takes the spicy aspect, the cloves and dill in particular, and runs with it off into the sunset.

  • Excerpt: Although it has its interesting spots, this does not taste like a rye whiskey in the traditional sense. The malted aspect seems to strip away the traditional bold and spicy nature of rye whiskey into something far smoother and easy to drink.

  • Intro:

Distilled by New Riff in Kentucky, aged for 6 years and featuring malted rye in the mashbill, this bottling has been long awaited since the distillery starting allowing small tastes back in 2019 while it was developing.

  • Nose:

Sweet cream at first, followed by an aggressive rye spice. It's lovely, complex, loaded with maple, orange peel, faint citrus and a touch of nougat.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel, nice complexity, toffee, honey, clove and baking spice. Sweet at first, big and spicy on the back palate. Ginger, spice, lovely maple. Oh my, it's lovely.

  • Finish:

Long finish, powerful, spicy and rye forward. Complex, this has everything I want, and nothing I don't.

  • Overall:

Absolutely killer rye that features complexity, a great digression from herbal ryes and a wallop of performance whether neat drinking or getting deep into cocktailing.
