  • Excerpt: A trace of salt and ice-cream wafers, and a gentle orange quality. It has a clammy, enclosed sense. Cloying almost and not revived by water.

  • Intro:

Distilled by Old Pulteney, this 18 year old Official Bottling is an expression matured in American and Spanish oak casks. There's no word of coloring or filtering, it's bottled at 46% ABV, and I often find a light minerality and brine character to Pulteney malt. Let's dig in.

  • Nose:

Rising bread, sweet yeast, brine and sea air, honey; toffee and raisin bread.

  • Taste:

Sweet initially, caramel, sweet bread, cream and honey. Almond, caramel, butterscotch, toffee. Peppery and bright, plenty of clove, horehound, lemon peel, brine and ocean air. Complex and fun. Proof is not a big factor, although the spicy back palate might be interpreted as so.

  • Finish:

Long finish, spicy pepper, ginger, orange peel, brine and rich nougat.

  • Overall:

Delectable. Of the Official Bottlings from Old Pulteney’s, this is absolutely one of my favorites. Certainly proof that you don't need a monster, cask strength dram to get a rich, complete profile.
