  • Excerpt: The nose was honey sweet, with a little grassiness, but the latter was very much in the background and behind the larger accent of peat. I found the flavor flowed very much in the same vein, plus a light dusting of cookie spices and pepper. The finish was light, with notes of smoke and wood.

  • Intro:

Distilled by Old Pulteney, this NAS release features ex-bourbon matured Old Pulteney distillate finished in peated malt casks. Bottled at 46% ABV with no coloring or filtering. Let's dive in.

  • Nose:

Apples, pears, a touch of sulfur and ash along with brine and maritime air. Touch of custard and honey. Pleasantly complex with a smoky touch.

  • Taste:

Honey, toffee, a touch of pepper, peat and ash. Buttery sweetness, a touch of sourdough and clove. Interesting blend of creme brulee and light, peaty smoke.

  • Finish:

Long finish, creamy and full of salinity, a touch of ash and a light dash of peat. Honey and peach cobbler.

  • Overall:

This is an interesting experiment, with a touch of peat joining the party originally thrown by Old Pulteney. For those who don't mind a dash of smoke in their Pulteney; you'll be squarely rewarded. A touch of ash and maritime salinity work great together, it turns out.
