Penelope 13yr American Light Whiskey

  • Distiller:

    MGP

  • Bottler:

    MGP

  • ABV:

    67.3%

  • Age:

    13 Years

  • Price:
    $$$$$
  • Intro:

Distilled at MGP and bottled by the Penelope Bourbon gang in New Jersey, this release is the first for the brand in taking a foray outside strictly bourbon. Distilled as Light Whiskey, which adheres to a slightly different set of rules apart from bourbon, this carries a hefty age statement, with a proof to match, yet a very reasonable sticker price: about $99.

  • Nose:

Sweet buttered popcorn, toffee, honey and a fresh hit of butterscotch, creme brulee and burnt sugar. The implication is a sweet pour, and there's a touch of tannin here as well.

  • Taste:

Bold and rich on the palate, a bit one-noted but that's American Light Whiskey's trademark profile. Pancake syrup, maple candies, light butterscotch. Oak is present but takes the backseat. Proof is apparent but not punishing.

  • Finish:

Long finish. This seems to be where this type of distillate shines most. Long, decadent and butter finish that's both complex and viscous, without a savage ethanol burn. Sweet cream and honey, a touch more oak here with a light floral finish that's just delicious.

  • Overall:

Penelope's take on the current rage of Light Whiskey is a good one, releasing a bottling that punches well at the price point, brings tons of flavor and a supple drinking experience despite a hefty proof. Make a gold rush cocktail with this one as well - you won't be disappointed.
