Distilled at MGP, blended by Penelope and finished in Vino De Naranja barrels, this is Penelope Valencia. Vino de Naranja, coined 'VDN' by many, is a sweet wine that's macerated on orange peels, and makes for a interesting finish compared to more contemporary wines.
Beautifully composed on the nose - baking spice, honey, orange marmalade, caramel and a citrus "pop".
Medium mouthfeel, nice viscosity. Not syrupy sweet or overly fruity. The mash bill works great here with the sweet orange wine. Bold maple, followed by honey, orange peel, zest, ginger, marmalade and honey.
Long finish, easily the best part. Lovely combination of orange peel, honey, maple, bold cocoa and clove.
Why say many words when few will do? Penelope's use of VDN here balances wonderfully with their choice of a 4 grain mashbill for a pour that's rich and sweet, but not too sweet, with a great balance of grain and fruit.
