  • Intro:

Produced from a mashbill featuring 84% corn, 8% malt and 8% rye, this release from Puncher's Chance comes to us sourced from IJW in Kentucky. 70 barrels make up the batch of 12yr whiskey, which sees finishing in California Cabernet wine casks. MSRP comes in at $120, and the bottling is released at 48% ABV. Named for the infamous saying “Go 12 rounds” Puncher’s Chance is a brand brought up backed by fighting talent.

  • Nose:

Sweet and pleasant on the nose, plenty of berry, honey, vanilla cream, a touch of orange peel and minerality, as well as some light oak.

  • Taste:

A bit of heat at first, some bitter oak followed by butter cream and toffee. Plenty of tannin, the Cabernet is definitely apparent with a rich, syrupy berry character and some oak and sweetness. Pralines, roasted nuts and caramelized maple.

  • Finish:

Long finish, bitter at first, heavy on the oak. Grape character, some blackberry and raspberry, followed by pepper, honey and rich buttercream.

  • Overall:

Lots of oscillation here - from sweet and fruity to bitter, oaky and mineral forward. This pour dips and ducks, changing direction from sip to sip. It’s got an oaky punch, there’s no doubt about that, and the cabernet works well here to bring some balance to the profile.
