  • Excerpt: If this is the floor for Pursuit United Rye, the world had better watch out. Impressively complex for the age, proofed just right, and enjoyable in a wide variety of applications.

  • Excerpt: This is a really nice rye whiskey. Still, it felt like a bourbon drinker’s rye more than a big and bold rye that might expand on or build on someone’s ideas of the style. That being said, this is going to make some killer cocktails later.

  • Excerpt: All in all this is a really nice rye expression and I think it’s proof-positive that the blending over at Pursuit Spirits isn’t a one trick pony.

  • Intro:

Billed as an adventure in bold flavors, Pursuit United Rye is the second volume in a growing series from the Pursuit Spirits gang. Pursuit United is headed up by the minds behind the Bourbon Pursuit podcast. After the positive reception that met the release of Pursuit United bourbon, the duo quickly assured drinkers everywhere that a rye could be expected as well. Blended from rye stocks distilled by Bardstown Bourbon Company in Kentucky and Sagamore Spirit in Maryland, the release once again focuses on the features of competent blending. It's bottled at 54% ABV.

  • Nose:

Bold, zesty, apple pie forward with plenty of rye character. Brown sugar, a touch of honey. Pound cake, a bit of oak.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate, sweet, spicy and everything in between. I'd put this firmly in the 'bourbon drinkers rye' camp but that's far from a knock. If high rye bourbon is your thing, this delivers like few others, especially for the age. Toffee, big, bold clove spice and a rye bread texture to the back palate. The proof delivers a viscous, powerful mouthfeel without a punishing, spirity personality. Just right.

  • Finish:

Long finish, brown sugar heavy once more. Clove, pepper, apple pie and pastry, brown butter, rich clove, black pepper, and a surprising amount of tannin.

  • Overall:

If this is the floor for Pursuit United Rye, the world had better watch out. Impressively complex for the age, proofed just right, and enjoyable in a wide variety of applications.
