A blend of 4- to 12-year bourbons, this NAS release clocks in at barrel proof featuring a mashbill of 74% corn, 20% rye, 4.5% malted barley and 1.5% wheat. This release comes long awaited after the success of the original Redwood Empire releases. Let's dive in.
Pecan pie, rich brown butter, toffee and a touch of tobacco. Pepper, honey and light oak. Faint, light must, yet plenty of oak and creme brulee.
Medium mouthfeel, a prickle of heat. Pecan pie, cream and honey, light pepper and a touch of bitterness. Creamed corn, creme brulee and caramel popcorn.
Short finish, a touch hot. Nothing abrasive, but a surprising amount of ethanol for a sub-60% ABV pour.
Quite nice, but a touch disjointed. The younger whiskey comes through a bit more than the old expressions, and that may catch some drinkers by surprise. Overall, it's super solid, but don't overstate the 12-year component... You have to dig to find it.
