  • Intro:

Matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, this is the 10 year age stated release from Speyburn, an often over-looked brand in the Scotch whiskey universe that's quickly seeing greater pick up in the United States. This release is bottled at 40% ABV with no mention of coloring or filtering.

  • Nose:

Sweet honey, fresh baked bread and biscuits. Sweet, a light hint of lemon peel. Floral, perfume-y. Waxed fruits, like Clynelish of old.

  • Taste:

Thin to medium on the palate. Sweet, fruity, lemon curd forward. Waxy, interesting. A touch of heat despite the low proof. Quite a bit going on here.

  • Finish:

Short finish, wisps away cleanly. A touch hot, despite the lower proof. Sweet, fruit forward, a bit of malt, and that big big buttercream and lemon note.

  • Overall:

Fascinating and interesting! Perhaps one of the best entry level, inexpensive single malts on the shelf. It can't unseat its older siblings, but it's well worth the price of admission, and provides a more unique profile for the age.
