  • Excerpt: Too expensive for what it is though, and I can’t help but direct you to plenty of other interesting places such as anCnoc – or for a tenner more you’d get the outstanding GlenDronach 18 Year Old. And for much less you’d get a much better 15 year old from Glengoyne.

  • Excerpt: Speyburn doesn’t taste particularly refined to me, especially when compared with a Springbank 15 Year Old, or a Highland Park 15 Year Old.

  • Intro:

Matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, this is the 15yr year age stated release from Speyburn. I've often recommended that the 18yr can crush Macallan in a blind tasting, and am curious what the 15yr can bring to the table. This release is bottled at 46% ABV and is devoid of coloring or filtering.

  • Nose:

Sweet, fragrant and floral. Bold, ripe fruits, honey, a touch of pound cake and blackberry. Buttery lemon curd, pepper, a touch of tobacco and vivid floral notes are present once again.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel, the ethanol is in check and has a pleasant viscosity. Honey, pepper, a touch of tobacco once more. Nougat-y pastry filling, blackberries and lingonberry as well as date fruit. Fairly syrupy, a nice seesaw between floral, honey, peppery notes and some sherry character that leans squarely into the fig and stewed fruit direction.

  • Finish:

Speyburn's character pops up here again with a great finish - a long, sweet, complex assortment of notes that sit nicely on the back palate. Honey, red berries, blackberry and currant, toffee, a touch of cream and waxy, lemon bar. Tobacco and raisin bread to finish off. Buttery chardonnay notes sign off the experience.

  • Overall:

Overall, this is quite lovely. Easy to drink, even easier to enjoy, and it's perfectly happy to be your armchair easy sipper, or a dram to really sit and think on. An easy choice to pick up over other, 15yr core range offerings from a great many producers.
