  • Intro:

Distilled by Springbank in Campbeltown, this release comes to us from the 2021 release of Local Barley - bottlings distilled from barley sourced extremely near to the Springbank estate. Aged entirely in Oloroso and bottled at cask strength, this high priced limited release is always at the top of Springer fan radar. Let's dive in.

  • Nose:

Sweet on the nose - most prominently: red berries, toffee, honey, some waffle cone and cracked pepper. Much more caramel, creme brulee, blackberry than expected.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel - not extremely viscous but very satisfying. Honey, toffee, grape and blackberry continue. Almost a currant jam sort of feel. Some slate and minerality, minimal ash and smoke. It's there, but restrained, balancing nicely with the pepper notes, the sweet jammy wine notes and some minerality.

  • Finish:

Long finish. More ash here, but so beautifully composed with the wine character. Excellent balance, and that blackberry note holds so strongly. I love it.

  • Overall:

Overall, Springbank's 2021 Local Barley Oloroso is a masterpiece. The power, balance, complexity and management of malt, wine and faint smoke is nothing short of art. A happy rebuy for me.
