A single barrel from a not often talked about producer, this is Starward from Australia! Using malt, yeast and wine barrels from Australia to create its whiskey, Starward is unabashedly proud of being an Australian producer — of which there are few. This was distilled in September 2017, matured in Barrossa Valley Shiraz red wine barrels and bottled at barrel proof. Let's dive in!
Rich, bold nose — cherry cola, red berries, big malt and loads of well-developed oak pop through. The wine and malt are apparent, really bright and enticing.
Rich on the palate, oak and the wine influence pair really well with the malt here. There's a really great viscosity to this whisky, which is layered and complex though easy to drink — 55% comfortably sits in the high proof range without becoming a chore. Notes of cola, char, toffee, honey, red berries and blackberry, tobacco and opulent warm pastry. Tons going on!
Long finish packed with cola and tobacco, sweet oak and blackberry. This is a killer release from Starward.
It's been years since I've had Starward, and it has been entirely my loss. These releases from Australia are tricky to find but absolutely awesome — complex, packed with flavor, proofed nicely and well priced despite the hunt to find them.
