  • Intro:

A cask-strength edition of Austin, Texas distillery Still Austin's "The Artist" straight rye whiskey, this cask-strength August 2023 release is distilled from 100% Texas rye and bottled at 116 proof.

  • Nose:

Punchy and full of brown sugar, lemon zest, big rye spice and a lovely pie crust note, this is a peppy rye that dodges and ducks between being heavy rye spice and softer dessert notes on the nose.

  • Taste:

The palate is moderate to rich. There's a pleasant amount of tannin here laced with brown sugar, apple butter, herbal spice, ginger and a pop of pine and pepper. It's all rye, and I like where they're going with this. Proofed nicely, not fiery in any way. This tastes well aged and is a winner.

  • Finish:

Short to medium finish. It doesn't hang on forever, but it doesn't need to. It's bold on the palate, and with the age and amount of time in oak, I'm not surprised that it isn't a monster finish. It trails off cleanly, full of pepper, ginger, maple and a hint of tobacco. Really easy to come back for another sip.

  • Overall:

Overall, Still Austin has been on a tear lately, releasing great Texas whiskey that bucks a lot of the issues I have with Texas whiskey. Still Austin's masterful control of the aging of the whiskey and the amount of tannin that gets introduced is really paying off. Really great release here.
