  • Intro:

“The Artist” — the first rye from Austin, Texas-based distillery Still Austin, is a straight rye whiskey made from Texas grains. Aged for at least two years and bottled at 99.6 proof, this whiskey doesn't scare us off with its young age statement. After all, Still Austin's young bourbon has impressed us in the past.

  • Nose:

Nose is loaded with char, nougat and warm, rising bread. Bit of rye spice, touch of green wood and youth.

  • Taste:

Loads of maple, anise, ginger, barrel char and bitter oak on the palate. It’s a bold rye, spicy and scrappy. It’s no smooth sip, but I enjoy how much maple and char show here, as it completely masks any youth from the nose.

  • Finish:

Long finish, packed with rye spice, pepper, clove and a good bit of barrel char once more.

  • Overall:

Still Austin is performing remarkably, full stop. When you consider its relative youth in the industry, it’s even more impressive. This rye is well on its way to greatness and in the meantime remains a well-composed sip and all-around good rye.
