  • Excerpt: This whiskey just did not hit the mark for me. Although I was able to find a lot of pieces in the taste, they were all buried under the coffee ground/char profile.

  • Intro:

Distilled by Westward and finished for 14 months in Grand Cru Sauternes casks, this is a release specially bottled for Westward's exclusive tasters club. It's bottled at 45% ABV. Let's dive in!

  • Nose:

Rich toffee, cocoa, sweet oak and a lush, rich, wine character full of candied apple, crème brûlée, stewed pears and a hint of minerality.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate, sweet and viscous. Plums, stewed apples and pear cobbler combine with pepper, a touch of slate and hefty oak.

  • Finish:

Long finish. The Sauternes is decadent, borderline opulent, and works well with Westward's malty and coffee-forward profile.

  • Overall:

This is a distinctive, wonderful release. It's an easy drinker that's all sorts of complex and full of great balance between oak, malt and wine finish. With a bit higher bottling proof, I have no doubt this would reach for the stars. As it were, it's already drinking quite well.
