  • Intro:

Distilled in Canada and bottled by WhistlePig in Vermont, USA, this is the fourth edition of WhistlePig's 18-year double-malted rye. This release is finished in PX sherry casks and bottled at 46% ABV. Let's dive in!

  • Nose:

Bright, floral, fruity and spicy. Berries and rye spice are clear, and powerful orange peel and clove reign supreme.

  • Taste:

The sherry on the nose is mild at best, but the palate unlocks the power of the sweet wine finish. Brown sugar, toffee, clove, pepper and a fat stack of oak tag along to keep things interesting.

  • Finish:

Long finish, jammy and oak forward, plenty of pepper, clove and a touch of orange peel. Quite complex, the high malt content of the rye takes on the wine well here, with a jammy finish.

  • Overall:

This is quite nice. The PX finish is neither scarce nor heavy-handed and works expertly with the already low-ish-proof rye. Tannin doesn't run out of control despite the lower proof and high age statement. United, old rye and a kiss of sherry work wonders from nose to finish.
