  • Excerpt: Consider me shocked - this is easily the best bourbon I've had coming from WhistlePig, and while they do not do a great job of disclosing it's not completely their distillate (a definite point they need to work on), it's also miles ahead of anything they've released thus far. Nice work, WhistlePig. I hope to see some 8, 10 and 12 year old releases on the horizon, hopefully with 100% farm distillate once its ready.

  • Excerpt: This whiskey provides a nice long finish full of exceptionally balanced flavors and aromas. The texture is smooth and delicately rich with a slightly creamy mouthful. The broad flavor profile holds up abundantly well on ice. Overall, it’s a great bourbon whiskey to spend a little time with.

  • Intro:

A blend of distillate from Vermont and Indiana, PiggyBack is WhistlePig's oldest bourbon release to date. Bottled with a 6-year age statement and at 50% ABV, this bourbon release is shockingly affordable as well. While WhistlePig is known for its rye, it's encouraging to see it move into other categories, and I'm looking forward to giving this a go. Let's dive in.

  • Nose:

Beautifully sweet and rich up front, there's quite a bit of maple, vanilla, sweet oak, a touch of clove and spice. Stark improvement on the recent Beyond Bonded bourbon.

  • Taste:

Moderate richness on the palate, it's easy to drink while maintaining much more complexity than I was honestly expecting. Sweet cream, rich maple and brown sugar, there's a surprising bit of oak and plenty of baking spice and clove.

  • Finish:

Long finish, this is probably the most enjoyable part. The finish carries, long and subtle. That combination of maple, spice and oak continues, woven together nicely by the complexity on the palate and an ABV that's dialed in well.

  • Overall:

Consider me shocked - this is easily the best bourbon I've had coming from WhistlePig, and while they do not do a great job of disclosing it's not completely their distillate (a definite point they need to work on), it's also miles ahead of anything they've released thus far.
