  • Intro:

This is the first single malt to come from California whiskey producer Wolves, which was founded by entrepreneurs James Bond (Undefeated) and Jon Buscemi (Buscemi, Greats, Truff, Oliver, Peoples). Wolves is distilling its single malts in a pot still imported from Cognac, France. Lot One was distilled in 2015 and bottled at 110 proof.

  • Nose:

Bold, sticky and rich. The malt strikes first, accentuated by caramels, rich and funky maple sugar, brown butter and bold espresso and malt. Opulent, layered and malt-forward, to say the least.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel. Fudge-forward with lots of espresso. Caramel, toffee, tobacco and a good deal of funky baking spice. The palate has moderate oak influence and is proofed nicely.

  • Finish:

Long finish full of coffee, oak, maple and brown butter, salted caramel and a touch of clove.

  • Overall:

Impressively rich, Wolves Single Malt reminds me of a Westward release that pairs together moderate tannin with a bold, powerful malt structure that's complex yet easy drinking. You need to love malt, caramel and espresso to be a big fan here, but if that's your profile, you'll be right at home.
